Dr. Steven J. Lawless is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist with a sub-specialty certification in pediatric radiology. He earned his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA) and completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Medical Center of Delaware (Newark). He is affiliated with the Medical Society of Delaware and is a staff member of Christiana Care.
Dr. Lawless first became interested in the field during his third year of medical school while witnessing radiological equipment in action during a visit to the radiology department. “I was sent down to the radiology department for a pulmonary arteriogram,” Dr. Lawless recalls. “In this procedure a catheter is passed through the heart. Passing through the heart can cause severe arrhythmias, so the radiologists like to have a medicine person there. This was 1979 with early 70s equipment.”
After his training, Dr. Lawless joined Papastavros’ Associates Medical Imaging (PAMI) 31 years ago. In 2018, PAMI merged with Diagnostic Imaging Associates to become Delaware Imaging Network.
His favorite part of being a radiologist is discovering something interesting on an X-ray or ultrasound. Dr. Lawless is particularly fascinated with ultrasound technology since it allows one to view the body in real time.
When he’s not working, Dr. Lawless enjoys cycling and mountain biking.
